Two Toys

Two Toys

When training a dog using toys how can we ensure the dog returns with a thrown toy and give it to its handler? Simple, play Two Toys! You need to have 2 toys that are exactly the same, gain the dogs attention and throw it a toy to fetch. As the dog picks it up attract it with toy 2. The dog should now run back to the handler. Offer toy 2 until the dog drops toy 1. Now without delay throw toy 2 for the dog. Work on this until the dog learns the game and how to drive the handler to throw the toy. This can now be developed into a means of reinforcement for high energy training, as seen in the video. Give a cue or command and as the dog complies throw the toy. Do as above to get the dog back and dropping the toy. Now give another cue and again throw the toy you are holding. As the dog chases the toy thrown the handler must run and collect the dropped toy. Great exercise for handler as well as dog! These videos are a great starting point for anyone, but to learn all the skills you need to really enjoy your dog then why not book a session with Dave Davies.
